#TPBTH Meet: Kate Daughtry

Name, craft/industry/blog/passion, most popular handle/website:

Kate Daughtry, Art/Photography, Instagram: @charlestontexture

How did you get started?

I had just moved to Charleston and was working downtown. Having not visited Charleston much before moving here, I started getting to know the city through long walks on my lunch breaks. Basically, I would get lost and give myself an hour to get back.

What or who influenced you the most as you were developing your craft?

Ever since I was little, I have always been involved in the arts, which teaches you how to look at things a little differently. On my first ever photography shoot as an art director in advertising, I was able to work with an amazing photographer, Harry DeZitter. He quoted Henry David Thoreau, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” and I’ve held onto that ever since.

Why do you love your job?

I love that it’s my creative outlet. I can look at the same thing that everyone else may be looking at, but by adding my caption to it becomes personal. It is also a reminder about how much I love where I live and to slow down and take a look around.

What inspires you?

People who tag me in photos of their own texture shots, as well as seeing other people taking similar pictures in various cities around the world. The most inspiring thing that has happened to me since starting Charleston Texture was when a 7th grade art teacher, who followed me on Instagram, assigned her class a project to pick one of my photos and paint it. It was a complete surprise and such an amazing moment to think about how my art inspired their art, and how they took what I had created and made it their own.

Something your followers would be surprised to learn about you:

I’m from Rhode Island originally, which is where I guess my love of old buildings and city texture came from. I personally feel that there’s a lot of similarity between the look and feel of Providence and Charleston. And of course living near water makes me feel right at home.

Favorite food: Pickles and Hot Sauce (condiments are everything!)

Favorite drink: LaCroix and Red Wine (sometimes at the same time)

Favorite song: This is an impossible question for me. Depends on the time of day or mood I’m in. Although, “Jolene” by Ray Lamontagne will never get old.

Favorite quote: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” by Henry David Thoreau
