#TPBTH Day 25, Meet: Lauren Hollington

#TPBTH Meet: Lauren Hollington

Name, craft/industry/blog/passion, most popular handle/website:

Lauren Hollington, Circulation & Marketing Manager for skirt! magazine and Where Charleston, skirt.com / wheretraveler.com/charleston (Instagram and Twitter: skirtcharleston)

How did you get started?

I was previously based in Augusta, GA working in Publishing for the parent company of skirt! magazine and Where Charleston. I enjoyed what I was doing there and the folks I worked with, but I needed a change in scenery. A job became available here in Charleston and, with little knowledge of the Lowcountry or what exactly my new job would be, I jumped at the opportunity to move here. It was the best decision I’ve made in life so far! Circulation & Marketing are new territories for me as I have had limited experience in these fields prior to coming on board with skirt! and Where. But I have hit the ground running in the last 8 months and am absolutely loving my new job, new colleagues, and new location!

What or who influenced you the most as you were developing your craft?

This has really been a “learn as you go” kind of experience for me. But I’m very fortunate to have amazing colleagues to guide me. Jenny Dennis & Caitilin McPhillips have been so incredibly supportive in helping me figure out/create our social media branding for our products. Their continued encouragement combined with the endless inspiration I find from my surroundings has been the most influential part of developing my craft.

Why do you love your job?

I love that I am constantly learning new things, meeting and collaborating with wonderful people, and being pushed out of my comfort zone to expand my horizons and broaden my perspective.

What inspires you?

I find the most inspiration from simply walking around the streets of Charleston and experiencing the beauty of the Lowcountry. The history and architecture of this area, along with the friendly and intriguing folks, have stirred a kind of creativity in me that I did not know I had. I consider myself exceptionally lucky to call Charleston my new home.

Five words that describe who you are:

Avid Traveler, Dog Mom, Architecture Admirer, Vitamin D Addict, Lover of All Things Sweet

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

I have always been drawn to animals, any and all kinds. So naturally, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. It turns out that I do not have a propensity for science; I am far more right-brained. Instead of treating animals medically, I adore to love on them!

Dream job:

Photography is my favorite form of artistic expression. I believe that a good photograph is timeless, can elicit strong emotions and transport you to another place each time you look at it. Being a professional photographer would be my dream job.

Three things you aspire to be or do:

1. Become a Certified Scuba Diver

2. Travel to Morocco and Ride a Camel

3. Learn to Speak Italian

(Fill in the blank)
I appreciate __________ in my life, because__________.

I appreciate my family and friends in my life because they keep me motivated and focused to be the best version of myself that I can be.

What was one of the hardest lessons or toughest obstacles you had to overcome?

When I was 14, I was involved in a bad accident in which I almost lost my left foot. After going through many experimental procedures, I am exceedingly thankful to say that I have a fully functioning foot that does not limit me from doing any activities. However, I do have some pretty serious scarring on multiple areas of my body. Learning to walk again was one of the most challenging things I’ve had to do in life thus far. But what was even more difficult was trying to rediscover my self-esteem and confidence in my “new” body. This was especially difficult for me as a young teenager. It has been a long journey, but I have learned to embrace these physical imperfections and wear them proudly, as they are a reminder of what I have lived through and that I am stronger than I think.

Advice for someone who is looking to begin a new hobby/job/life pursuit:

Take a leap of faith! Step out of your comfort zone; try anything and everything. If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.

Something your followers would be surprised to learn about you: Before moving to Charleston, I worked for three hunting and fishing publications based in my hometown of Augusta, GA. I picked up fly fishing and love to go on trips with my dad and younger brother. My favorite trip to date was when we traveled to Cabo San Lucas and caught Roosterfish!

Favorite food: Macaroni & Cheese or Chips & Queso

Favorite drink: Coffee with Bailey’s Creamer or an “Arnold Palmer” – aka sweet tea and lemonade

Favorite song: Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” – this is the song that my fiancé and I will have as our first dance together at our upcoming wedding in October

Favorite quote: My grandfather was such an inspiration to me, as well as the rest of our family. He always used to say, “You gotta keep on keepin’ on.” Whenever things get tough for me, I remember these words and they motivate me to do exactly that.
