#TPBTH Meet: Christian Senger

Name/Craft/Website/Most popular handle:

Christian Senger, HolyCitySinner.com Blog, @HolyCitySinner on Twitter

How did you get started?

I started the blog after realizing how many local events, concerts, charities, and stories were underrepresented. As great as the traditional media can be, it’s impossible for them to share everything. This meant a lot of awesome events, businesses, and people were being overlooked. I thought I could add my voice to the mix and it would be worthwhile.

What or who influenced you the most as you were developing your craft?

I didn’t really have a day-to-day influence, but blogs like Gothamist in NYC showed me that alternative sources of information could not only be relevant, but could also thrive. It would be amazing to see HCS grow into something similar.

Why do you love your job?

I love working on my blog, because it doesn’t seem like real work to me. I get to write about fun things, meet interesting people, attend exciting events, and experience things I never would have without the blog.

What inspires you?

The city inspires me, or more accurately, the residents of Charleston inspire me. Just about everyone has something incredible to share and many residents are working on something that is fascinating. There are so many “do-it-yourselfers” and endlessly motivated people who are working on some sort of project or another. Each is working to make themselves feel more fulfilled, and in turn, are making the city better.

5 words that describe who you are:

Easy-going, curious, receptive, hedonistic, goofy

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a radio DJ or sports announcer when I grew up

3 things you aspire to be or do:

kind to everyone, less introverted, and more present

(Fill in the blank) I appreciate ________ in my life, because ________.

I appreciate my family in my life, because over the years I’ve learned how lucky I am to have their support and encouragement. I know many people who haven’t been as lucky as me.

What was one of the hardest lessons or toughest obstacles you had to overcome?

The most consistent obstacle in my adult life has been dealing with anxiety. It’s something I’ll probably always be working on/against

Advice for someone who is looking to begin a new hobby/job/life pursuit?

It my seem cliche and simplistic, but just do what you love, do what feels fun and exciting. If you don’t, it won’t be worth it. If you’re having fun, but want to go to that next level, you have to open yourself up to help, suggestions, and/or criticism. Sometimes it’s good to hear from someone on the outside of your bubble.

Something your followers would be surprised to learn about you?

Surprised to hear: People that don’t know me would probably be surprised to hear that the person who runs a blog that heavily covers events and parties, is pretty introverted

Favorite food:

This is kind of embarrassing since I live in one of the best culinary cities in the country, but there is really nothing better than a pizza. I know, I know… I *love* the pickled shrimp at Edmund’s Oast, the lima beans at Martha Lou’s, any steak at Hall’s Chophouse, etc., etc. and I know those dishes are more impressive, but not much beats a pizza

Favorite drink:

Coffee. It wakes me up, it motivates me, it makes people more tolerable, and makes me more fun to deal with. My favorite coffee spots are The Orange Spot (hot) and Brown’s Court Bakery (iced).

Favorite song:

This is impossible for me to answer because it’s always changing. My favorite song of the moment is “Hallelujah” by Panic! at the Disco because the chorus makes me think of my the blog haha.

Favorite quote:

Pretty much any part of Rudyard Kipling’s “If” or “Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.”
