#TPBTH Day 2, Meet: Brooke Ryan

#TPBTH Meet: Brooke Ryan

Name, craft/industry/blog/passion, most known handle/website:

Brooke Ryan. Radio Personality at Mix 96 on the 2 Girls and a Guy Show. My most popular handle is on Twitter (that’s where I have the most followers) but my handle ItsBrookeRyan is the same on all forms of Social Media. www.ItsBrookeRyan.com

How did you get started?

I got my start in radio when I was 18 years old and needed a job while I was attending a Junior college in Bakersfield, California (my hometown). I ran into an old friend of mine that was working at the local radio station, 96.5 Kiss Fm, and he said my personality would be PERFECT for radio. I met the program director and sure enough, 2 weeks later I was hired.

Who or what influenced you the most as you were developing your craft?

There have been multiple people that influenced my radio career. But if I had to narrow it down to the 5 people I would thank in an acceptance speech, I would definitely have to say Don Cristi and Lauren Michaels. They were a part of my early developement as a personality and truly showed me the way, and on top of it, they made radio FUN. Paul O’Malley (the General Manager at the first radio station I worked for in Charleston) has been such an incredible mentor. He has so much insight into this business and has been the go to person I call when I need advice. AND OF COURSE, Tanya & Mike. When I first got to Charleston 10 years ago I was still trying to figure out my “personality”. Should I go all in and say what I mean? Should I tone it down? Do I reveal everything about my life? Do I keep some things private? They we’re their to help mold me into the Brooke Ryan I am today.

Why do you love your job?

Why do I love my job? Oh there are so many reasons…I get to wake up every morning, drink coffee, and chat about life with my best friends. It sounds so cheesy but it’s true. On top of that, we are invited into the lives of so many people in the Lowcountry. Tanya, Mike, & I share our stories, major life moments, and sad times and our listeners do the same. We laugh together, cry together, and get through our mornings together. It’s a really special connection. Some of the people that call in I have only met once or twice, but feel like they are family because we talk every day. Oh, and free concert tickets and we get to take selfies with celebrities.

What inspires you?

Passionate People inspire me. I don’t care if you are passionate about your job, a TV show, or ketchup. I love seeing people talk about or do something they love. One of the most inspiring people I have found on Social Media that really inspires me is Gary Vaynerchuck. If you aren’t following @garyvee on everything…you are missing out.

5 words that describe you:

fun, self aware, sassy, bold, energetic

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

As a kid, I wanted to be a singing dentist. I wanted to sing to my patients so we wouldn’t have to listen to the elevator music that was always playing in the office. I was 7 or 8 and quickly grew out of that phase when I realized not everyone brushes and flosses.

Dream job:

I really am living my dream job. I used to say I want to do mornings in a major market, but I did that for 4 years and found myself missing Charleston…and Tanya and Mike. I love working with them. I wish I had more time to do my podcast, I Love This Buzz. Basically, I invite a few local people to enjoy some cocktails (get a buzz) and talk about what is buzzing in pop culture, the city, and their lives. I’ve been doing it every other week but would love to have it as a weekly feature. Listen to some of the past podcasts- Soundcloud.com/itsbrookeryan

3 things you aspire to be or do:

  1. An understanding human being.
  2. Somebody that people think of fondly. When my name is mentioned, I want people to smile or laugh or have a good memory of me.
  3. Beyonce

(Fill in the blank) I appreciate _______in my life, because _______.

I appreciate my husband because he keeps me balanced.

What was one of the hardest lessons or toughest obstacles you had to overcome?

When it comes to hard lessons and obstacles, I’ve had my share. There are 3 quotes I keep in mind whenever life presents an obstacle.

  1. Not everyone is going to like you, and that’s ok.
  2. Fake it till you make it.
  3. If Britney Spears can make it through 2007, you can make it through today.

Advice for someone who is looking to begin a new hobby/job/life pursuit:

GO FOR IT! Start a new life, hobby, or job. I am a firm believer in taking the leap…but make sure there is a net. There are different levels of a net as you age. I always ask myself “What is the worst that can happen?” At 20, the worst would be I go back to California, live with my family for a while, and go back to school. At 32 there is more at stake. I have a husband, a cat…ok I guess we could still go back to Cali and live with my fam. Follow your dreams but don’t get so caught up in them that you neglect the real world.

Something your followers might be surprised to learn about you:

Fun Facts you might not know about me- At 13 I was part of a Select Choir that went to Japan to sing. I have never seen an Indiana Jones movie. No matter what I am doing, I would rather be doing it with a glass of red wine in my hand while a Britney Spears song is on (if you follow me, you might already know that).

Favorite food:

A medium rare filet from Hall’s Chophouse

Favorite drink:

A glass of Ferrari-Carano Sienna red wine.

Favorite song:

Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson

Favorite quote:

“You don’t have to love me. You don’t have to like me. But you will respect me, because I’m a boss.” -Kelis
