#TPBTH Meet: James Joslin
Name, craft/industry/blog/passion, most popular handle/website:
James R Joslin, Watch enthusiast, writer (blogging, reviews, market reactions, trending, and everything in between.) www.charlestonwatchsociety.com (coming soon) (IG: @Thecharlestonwatchsociety)
How did you get started?
I have always had a passion for watches. I can remember being a kid and wearing watches. The drive to seriously learn more about the world of watches probably developed several years ago. Eventually I moved down to Charleston and wanted a way to meet more people who shared the same passions as I did. I figured that social media (IG) would be a great way to meet people. I needed a name that would draw fellow enthusiast out so to speak. I wanted name that when read… there was no mistaking it for what it was. I played around with tons of different ideas, and finally settled on “The Charleston Watch Society.” It started off slowly and I didn’t put much effort or thought into it. I would just share a daily picture of a watch from my personal collection. It picked up, and I started to interact with different people on the page etc. About a year ago, I posted a picture of a Squale 1545 and people went crazy. (Compared to now it was nothing.) But I quickly realized that people had started to pick up on my page. I decided to keep sharing more, and more, and began seriously interacting with the people on IG. From there it really just took off. I always say that it is so much more than just the watches. It is the connections you make with people, its the ability to interact with someone in Dubai who shares the same passion. It is absolutely incredible, I have been fotunute enough to meet so many amazing people. The IG page has continued to grow at an exponential rate and I am currently designing my website, its pretty crazy.
What or who influenced you the most as you were developing your craft?
The whole idea for my page, and the love for watches and people really came from myself. If I had to pick two major moments in my life that definitely impacted me. One would be when I received a Tag Heuer Carrera from my parents as a High School graduation gift. That was the first “real watch” I ever had, and I was able to feel what it was like to have a nice watch. I remember even then people would talk to me about watches. The second would be the people that I look up to in my field. Whether large social media accounts, and or just regular people asking me questions, or sparking conversations about watches. Last but not least: jewelers. I always love to see all the watches etc..
Why do you love your job?
What I do is amazing, I get to play with incredible watches day in and day out. Even more incredible are the people… like I said before its about the people for me. “Connecting People and Watches!” I love to meet different people, I love good conversation, I love to learn, and try new things. It is absolutely mind boggling the things that this account on IG has afforded me. It really is all about the relationships!
What inspires you?
The people that have gone before me, the individuals who have been doing this for 25 years. The amazing watchmakers, the large brands, the competition. Its all an inspiration. I plan on taking this to the next level, I plan on doing this for the rest of my life. That inspires me… I have to say when I first started this page, people laughed, they would ask what is: The Charleston Watch Society? “Why are you wasting your time with watches” etc.. I kept moving forward.. I think my biggest inspiration is the unknown. What will I be doing, where will I be, who will I have met in 20 years. That inspires me!! Last but not least, the people that look to me for answers, or a friendly hello, or even my opinion, they inspire me!

Something your followers would be surprised to learn about you:
That I am a normal person. I think sometimes people forget that we are all human and or they create a fictitious version of who they think I should be. I am just a regular guy who loves watches! OH, I do have to pay for the watches!! HaHa! People seem to think that when you reach a certain level things become free… nothing is free in this world… not even for me. I might get decent deals, and or some things for free, but I have had to work to get to this point.
So hard… I love food…. Thai kick as of late, but without a doubt I can survive off of pizza.
Bourbon/ whiskey neat, or a cold I.P.A.
