Ever heard of Wich Cream? NO?!?! Well, that’s about to change (and you will thank me for it…trust me)! Wich Cream is a local, ice cream sandwich company founded by best friends; Brandon Belk and Alex Herlocker. Each ice cream sandwich is handmade and made from local, seasonal ingredients. You may have seen their cart at the Charleston Farmers Market at Marion Square on Saturday mornings (that is, if they haven’t sold out for the day-they are very sought after)!
The two friends began their venture last year after family and friends encouraged them that they had a great product and needed to make a go of it. The duo had the perfect balance of culinary skill and sales experience to take their great idea to the next step and over the last year, have grown their company. The flavors are spot on (greatly in part to Brandon’s understanding of texture, acidity, saltiness and sweetness) and are perfectly balanced, which he credits to his time in culinary school and years of working in great restaurants. Having a great product is important, however its crucial to know how to brand it and get it out there for people to try, and that is where Alex’s past experience in sales, really helped to launch the product forward. When I asked them, what was the reason for starting in the first place, they said , “we saw a need and calling for the return of artisan food.” Its true, we are all familiar with the term, farm-to-table, however as Brandon says, “its time to extend that concept, beyond restaurants and grocery stores…its time for artisan food to come back.” And I think its safe to say that extends to the freezer:) These two super nice and talented guys are the ones responsible for, formulating all the recipes and hand making every single sandwich they sell. The two of them (when not working their full time jobs) are in the kitchen and in the freezer making, assembling and wrapping them, each individually. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these sweet treats, they are dynamite! You gotta check them out, or order them for a party (great for weddings, birthday parties etc).
