3 Places To Make A Rezzy ASAP: FIG

This is the third part of a 3 segment mini series called: “3 Places To Make A Rezzy ASAP.” All of the places in this blog series are places that I enjoy greatly and highly recommend making a reservation at because they are always packed and are MIND BLOWINGLY FANTASTIC! Thats why they are always packed! If you can’t grab a reservation, then try to snag a seat at the bar…because even though you may have to wait…the food is worth it! I recommend making a reservation at these places and treating yourself to some delicious food-because this after all, is one of the reasons we live in Charleston or visit it. Life is too short to not enjoy the good things-sometimes that might mean scheduling far in advance, even if its not a special occasion, do it just for the simple pleasure of: enjoyment.

FIG (Food Is Good)

A few years ago I received a gift card from a client at Christmas, to her favorite restaurant: FIG.  I had never been and she was always telling me how amazing it was…so I was thrilled that I finally had a good reason to go. Her suggestion to me, was to call ahead of time to get a reservation (because it would be awhile before I could get in). It was 2010, I remember I called and booked something for a few weeks later…I will never forget how excited I was.  It was probably one of the first times in my adult life that I was calling more than 2 weeks ahead of time for a reservation that wasn’t a special occasion.  And then it happened, we had our first FIG experience.  It was special, the food was amazing, the service was spot on.  IT WAS…PERFECTION.  ABSOLUTE CULINARY PERFECTION!!!

I have been back, many times and I always leave-every-single-time, with the exact same feeling: IT IS PERFECT AND EATING THERE, MAKES ME REALLY HAPPY.  There aren’t many places like that.  Even some of my favorite places that I regularly visit, have “off nights” or sometimes I order wrong, or sometimes its just: ok.  But not FIG.  I don’t know how they maintain that level of quality, service and menu excitement, but they do it and they do it well.  Every dish has a nice balance, slight surprise and is just the right portion that when I walk away I feel good about what I’ve eaten.

Why is it so great?  The answer to that question is much too long for 1 blog post!  However for starters, the restaurant has been associated with bringing home, 2 James Beard Awards.  Both were for, BEST CHEF SOUTHEAST, Chef/Partner Mike Lata (2009) and current Executive Chef Jason Stanhope (2015).  FIG’s Manager/Partner Adam Nemirow attended culinary school in Paris and has an MBA in restaurant management from Johns and Wales (RI).  Take those accolades and put that in combination with the fact the food is made from the freshest local/seasonal ingredients from some of the best farms and purveyors in the area (and then, add all of that to the atmosphere) which is comfortable, lovely and unpretentious.  And thats how you get perfection.  Its where people who enjoy really good food, go to eat.  So make your reservation ahead of time, otherwise you probably won’t get in and this is probably the #1 place in Charleston you do not want to miss!
